Over 400 km of metro corridors, 1,200 km of additional road network, 530 km of dedicated bus lanes, several inter-state and inter-city bus terminals, passenger water terminals, cycle paths are just a few planned infrastructure projects in the Mumbai Metropolitan Area (MMR) over the next two decades. The Mumbai Metropolitan Area Development Authority (MMRDA) on Thursday released the Comprehensive Transportation Study (CTS) outlining some new projects and the implementation of the proposed projects in the MMR.

He also said that the share of public transport declined significantly between 2005 and 2017. MMRDA officials described the decline in public transport use in the MMR as a “danger signal” and a “serious problem” that needed to be dealt with immediately. SVR Srinivas, MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner, said that the share of commuter trains, Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) Undertaking bus has been declining over the past 12 years.

“In the last 10 years or so, a serious trend has been observed. The share of public transport in MMR has increased from 78% to 65%. The share of rail and BEST buses has also declined. This means that private vehicles have increased considerably. It’s a danger signal to me, ”Srinivas said during the CTS unveiling.

According to the report, the trips of two-wheelers and cars almost doubled during the period. In 2005, MMR had 0.63 million car trips and 1.05 million two-wheeler trips. This figure rose to 2.34 million two-wheeler trips and 1.59 million car trips in 2017. Interestingly, although commuter train trips fell from 6.98 million to 8.11 million. over the 12 years, the percentage of people has increased from 51.8% to 43.2%.

Srinivas added, “In a city like Mumbai that is growing vertically, the share of public transport is expected to increase and that is dangerous. We are at an inflection point and must take immediate action. Unless we have more people using public transport, we will not be able to keep up with the demand. He added that with the implementation of the CTS, they intend to increase the share of public transport to 75.4%.

The first comprehensive transport study was published in 2008, on the basis of which several projects were implemented in Mumbai and in the MMR, including the 6.45 km Santacruz-Cembur link road, the transport project Mumbai Urban (MUTP), which included suburban railway projects, 11.4km Versova- Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro Line and 16.8km Eastern Highway project.

The CTS 2021-2041 is largely made up of previously proposed or planned projects. The new study, meanwhile, is divided into short-term (until 2026), medium-term (until 2031), and long-term (until 2041) plan. The study recommended a 487 km metro network, a 232 km commuter train network, 533 km of dedicated bus / BRTS lanes and an additional 1,264 km road network by 2041.

Tourism and Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray, who is also the Minister Guardian of the Mumbai Suburbs District, said developed countries rely heavily on public transport. For Mumbai, the dependency would come when there were additional BEST buses, more metro lines. “Today we have 3,500 buses, we will be able to use the full potential of public transport when we have 10,000 buses,” he said.

State Minister of Urban Development Eknath Shinde has said that, like suburban railways, subways will need to be the lifeline of MMR, which will help reduce the number of private vehicles on the roads. He also said that projects must be completed within a specified time frame to see their full impact.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said: “Planning is an ongoing process. The transportation system is our city’s blood circulation and our needs are increasing and planning is a must to keep up with those needs. Today, the percentage of people using public transport has decreased, as the figures show. But it will only increase when we give people a clean and tidy public transport system. However, we must not kill the environment by going for development.

Some of the projects proposed in the CTS include a four-lane tunnel under Sanjay Gandhi National Park between Borivali and Thane, such as a 20.75 km metro line between Taloja and Kalyan, the missing link of Nariman Point-Cuffe Parade, the Thane coastal road, the metro line between Siddhivinayak (Prabhadevi) and the future international airport of Navi Mumbai. The estimated cost of all the projects to be carried out is exceeded ??4 lakh crore. MMRDA expects that nearly ??48 761 crore will come from private participation, ??93,933 crores would come from the Center through a share or grant, and ??803 crore of development costs.

The study further recommended four interstate bus terminals, 13 inter-city bus terminals, five inter-city rail terminals, five major and 14 minor truck terminals and 25 passenger water terminals by 2041. As part of An immediate requirement, the study also recommended various traffic management measures such as improving intersections, overflights, elevated roads, road bridges, subways and cycle paths.

The study recommended the construction of 322 km of metro lines or 14 metro corridors, 172 km of additional commuter rail lines, 319 km of reserved lanes for buses or Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), 824 km of road network additional in the MMR by 2026. The estimated cost of these projects is ??3.13 lakh crore.
