Senator Grace Poe urged the Department of Tourism (DOT) to ensure that healthcare facilities meet tourist destination standards so travelers feel safe and confident.
âIn all regions of our country, ideally, there should really be basic health facilities that can meet the needs of the population. We have heard stories of tourists going to certain areas where the local health center is not equipped to deal with certain emergencies, âPoe said during a Senate tourism committee hearing on Tuesday (October 12th).
“The new normal requires us to weave pandemic health protocols into all aspects of the economy in the years to come, so that health facilities are more than ever an integral part of tourism,” he said. -she adds.
Poe stressed that the country’s tourism sector “is one of the pillars that supported the economy before the pandemic”.
“With a larger portion of the population vaccinated, we can expect more mobility and domestic travel that will allow the provinces to begin their economic recovery,” she noted.
Citing government data, Poe said the tourism industry in 2019 contributed 2.5 trillion pesos to the economy.
The pandemic and the closure of resorts and hotels and the resulting travel restrictions resulted in its value being reduced by 61%, to 973.3 billion pesos by the end of 2020.
Likewise, Poe said data from the Philippine Statistics Authority showed Filipinos spent 3.14 trillion pesos in 2019 to visit local destinations, but that figure fell to 556.89 billion pesos in the year. last.
The latest government report says more than 26.4 million people have been vaccinated with their first dose of coronavirus vaccine while 23.1 million are now fully vaccinated.
To boost economic activity, Poe previously co-authored a bill that would allow the use of the vaccination passport for international and domestic travel, ease of access to business establishments and public places.
